137 soldiers killed, 316 injured on first day of Russia attack on Ukraine

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at least 137 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 316 were injured on the first day of the Russian assault, which began early Thursday.

Russia’s troops entered Ukraine from a number of directions on Thursday, only hours after President Vladimir Putin proclaimed the start of a special military operation.

Putin encouraged Ukrainian soldiers in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine to lay down their arms and come home in a televised address on Thursday morning.

He warned Ukraine that any carnage will be blamed on it.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed in a statement that its air strikes on Ukraine were not directed at cities and did not represent a threat to people, but rather at Ukraine’s military.

But more than 100 fatalities have been reported.
