AFCON Final: Gabaski Reveals What Salah Told Him Moments Before Saving Mane’s Penalty Kick

Abou Gabal “Gabaski,” Egypt’s goalie, has created a reputation for himself as a penalty save wizard at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Following the injury to first-choice goalkeeper El-Shenawy, the 33-year-old Zamalek shotstopper was only inserted into the competition in the last 16 against Cote d’Ivoire.

Gabaski then saved a penalty shootout attempt by Eric Bailly, advancing Egypt to the quarter-finals.

He replicated his penalty heroics against Cameroon, saving two attempts to send the hosts packing.

Senegal was granted an early penalty in the final on Sunday after Abdel Monem’s rush charge took down Saliou Ciss in the box.

As Sadio Mane prepares to take the penalty kick, his Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah was observed conversing with Egypt goalie Gabaski, allegedly instructing him where Mane would aim his spot kick.

Mane then stepped over to Gabaski and requested him to return to the post in order for the kick to be taken, which he finally saved.

According to MBC Egypt, Gabaski has now disclosed the entire specifics of how that discussion went down.

“Salah informed me that Mane would shoot to the right side, and he’s on his way now because he understands what I’m saying.’ “ ‘I’ll shoot on the left,’ Mane suggested, and Salah answered, ‘Let’s see.'” Egypt (MBC)
