AMA city cleaners protest over 11 months unpaid salaries
On Thursday, several workers protested at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for unpaid wages.
Workers who maintain the Central Business District tidy gathered at the AMA to protest.
They carried a bottle of schnapps and eggs with them to blame the authorities for the payment delay.
The workers claim to be paid as low as GH200 each month, but the Assembly has not paid them for almost a year.
The workers, who numbered around 120, said that living had become unpleasant as a result of the Assembly’s inability to keep its end of the contract.
“It’s not like we make a lot of money. We are only paid GH200 every month. I just lost my spouse, which is why I am working to support my family. How do they think we’ll survive? ‘Do we have to steal or prostitute ourselves to survive?’ one of the disgruntled employees stated
Later, Accra Mayor Elizabeth Sackey summoned the employees to a conference, where they were guaranteed of payment in the coming weeks.
