E-levy: Govt fails to meet revenue target

After almost two months of implementation, the Electronic Transactions Levy (e-levy) has only brought in less than $60 million, according to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party.

He claimed that the levy fell short of what the government had hoped it would accomplish.

What choices does the government have? What alternative, if chosen, can restore investor confidence in our economy, should be the real question. Will it assist even if we manage to raise the $3–5 billion necessary? “E-levy, which was supposed to have given us over 600 million by now, has only generated less than 60 million,” he wrote in a tweet on Monday, June 27.

What choices does the government have? What alternative, if chosen, can restore investor confidence in our economy, should be the real question. Will it assist even if we manage to raise the $3–5 billion necessary? E-levy has only provided us with less than 60m of the 600m that it was supposed to.

Although, Mr Otchere-Darko said he is not against a move to the IMF, he is opposed to them offering “peanuts” to the country which comes with harsh conditions.
