Robert Asare Bediako, the defeated aspiring Ashanti Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claimed he was astonished he lost the election after bribing delegates GH1k apiece for votes.
While expressing alarm over the country’s seeming monitisation of politics, Asare Bediako stated he later learned that his opponents donated more to the delegates than he did, resulting in his defeat.
“I believed I would win by paying each delegate GH1,000, but some paid more than me, so the delegates also fell in to the highest bidder, and the tendency of commercialization in our body politics is quite frightening,” she said. Robert Asare Bediako was quoted by 3news.
After a close race, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi, was re-elected for a third term on Saturday, May 28, 2022.
His overwhelming victory against his biggest rival was not easy, as Kumasi was the focus of attention on Saturday.
Bernard Antwi-Boasiako regained his seat with 464 votes, while his closest rival, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, commonly known as Chairman Coka, received 306 votes.
Kofi Adum Bawuah (3 votes), Asare Bediako Robert (20 votes), and Kwabena Owusu Aduomi were the other candidates in the contest (9 votes).
Robert Asare Bediako, reacting to the results, urged party members to put their differences aside and guarantee that the party “breaks the eight” in 2024.
“After this election, let’s try and put behind all grievances and differences and back the elected executives to maintain NPP in power,” he said.
