How Asiedu Nketia secures landslide victory as NDC National Chairman
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, alias General Mosquito, has been elected National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a hotly contested election conducted at the Accra Sports Stadium, he defeated incumbent Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and two others.
According to preliminary findings, Mr Nketia, who stood down as General Secretary after 17 years, received 5,574 votes, or 65.17 percent of the vote, to win by a landslide.
At the NDC’s 10th National Delegates Conference, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo trailed Mr Nketia by 2,892 votes, or 33.81 percent.
Nii Armah Ashietey and Samuel Yaw Adusei, the other contenders in the contest, received 38 and 52 votes, respectively.
The voter turnout was 94%.
Mr Nketia, often known as General Mosquito, stepped down as the NDC’s General Secretary after a 17-year tenure to seek for Chairmanship.
He was certain that his position as National Chairman was the only route for the NDC to gain power in 2024.
About an hour to the end of the collation, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo was spotted leaving the stadium in his vehicle.
