Sad news as boy, 9, drowns at Rattray Park, K’si on Easter Sunday

A family’s Easter trip ended in tragedy on Sunday afternoon when their nine-year-old son drowned in a swimming pool at Rattray Park Recreational Center in Kumasi.

Mensah Bonsu, a student at Kumasi’s Blessed Gift Model School in Class Three, was killed.

“On Sunday, April 17th, when we returned from church, we decided to go to the Rattray Park Recreational Center to enjoy the Easter festival,” said Janet Opoku, the deceased’s mother, who confirmed the incident to Akoma FM.

“At first, the youngster didn’t want to swim in the pool,” Madam Janet said, weeping, “but later, when he informed me that he would join his other siblings in the water, I advised him to wait until I bought a towel.”

My son had apparently jumped into the pool and drowned when I returned with the towel. So when I came to the poolside, I witnessed them trying to revive him by pounding his chest with their hands, but he died soon after.”

Though the Rattray Park Recreational Center’s administration has yet to comment, Akoma FM’s sources say the matter has been officially submitted to the Ridge Police Station for further investigation, and the body is still at the morgue awaiting autopsy.
