These are the conditions Teacher Unions gave to GES for Promotion to the Grade of Director I and II

GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH have imposed criteria on the Ghana Education Service (GES) for promotion to the Grades of Director I and II.

The Teacher Unions claimed that the same standards that apply to promotions in the Senior Ranks should also apply to the Grades of Director I and II.

In a letter to GES Director-General Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the Teacher Unions requested that promotions to Director I and II be based on merit rather than openings in the future.

Teachers who qualify, according to the unions, should be promoted to these levels while remaining in the classroom and placed on the appropriate scale.

“In our last meeting, it was noted that promotion in the Ghana Education Service (GES) shall be made according to merit and in accordance with the Scheme of Service.” The Unions said.

According to the Teacher Unions “It was also, observed that determining an individual’s claim for promotion, account shall be taken of qualification, experience, efficiency, seniority, sense of responsibility, initiative, general behaviour and where relevant, the powers of leadership, expression and requisite attendance of in-service teaching courses, as enjoined by the Collective Agreement.”

“Unfortunately, the disturbing issue is that, availability of vacancy in the promotion grade is the key determinant.”

“This creating disaffection, unbearable frustration and irreparable damage to career progression within the Service, with its dire effects on pensions/retirement.” The letter disclosed.
