WATCH: Video of Ghanaian chiefs giving away massive gold to Queen Elizabeth II in 1961
Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday, an old video appeared online showing numerous Ghanaian chiefs gifting the monarch with massive sums of gold during her historic first visit in 1961.
The late Queen of England, her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Philip visited Cape Coast in 1961, and the footage shows chiefs lined up to present them with gold presents.
This film was shot during a durbar of chiefs and people hosted for the Queen and her husband in the former Gold Coast capital.
The film clearly shows how the British royalty got various gold things, most notably a solid gold miniature palanquin, which is reported as the main gift from the Fante leaders.
Queen Elizabeth also received a wonderfully carved solid gold linguist’s staff and a small gold sword.
